Article 2: Executive Department

 

President

·        four year term

·        elected by majority of electoral college

·        electors for each state = number of Senators and Representatives

·        must be natural born citizen

·        must be thirty-five years old

·        must have resided in U.S. for fourteen years

·        salary not diminished during term

·        Oath of Office: “I do solemnly swear that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States”

·        Commander and Chief of the armed forces and state militias

·        commissions United States armed forces officers

·        chooses cabinet to head various executive departments with consent of the Senate

·        power to grant pardons and reprieves, except in cases of impeachment

·        makes treaties with 2/3 concurrence of Senate

·        appoints ambassadors, public ministers, consuls, judges of Supreme Court, other federal judges, military officers, with consent of Senate

·        State of Union address

·        receives ambassadors and other public ministers, recognizes foreign governments

·        sees that laws are faithfully executed

·        veto power, pocket veto

·        can be impeached and removed from office for treason, bribery, or other high crimes and misdemeanors

 

Vice President

·        assumes power upon President’s removal, death, resignation, or inability to discharge duties

·        amendments provide detail on presidential succession (Vice President, Speaker of the House, President Pro-Tempore, last appointed cabinet head)
